Taming a Hot Mess – The Simplified Planner

Taming a Hot Mess – The Simplified Planner

I am a keeper of lists.  Lists everywhere!  I make them on the back of envelopes.  There are receipts with critical “To Dos” scratched on them in random places throughout the house, as well as the car floorboard.  I have them on Post-Its, and cute notepads, and loose leaf paper, and… Occasionally I write them on my hand or leg (when in shorts).  Honestly.  I do.

As much fun as it is for me to make those lists, and maybe you can identify, they were pretty much worthless to me in those locations.  Thus, a whole lot of things did not get done on a regular basis.  I was sinking, and fast. Then, I discovered planners. Call it divine intervention. Call it luck. Call it an awakening. Whatever it was, it was a life raft, and I needed one badly.

Where Have You Been All My Life?!

Now, I know a lot of you probably already use planners.  That’s great!  If you love the one you are using, fabulous!  Please be sure and comment on this post and share the name of your planner and why you love it.  If you do NOT currently use a planner and are a list maker, a “To Do” forgeter, a procrastinator, and just generally an all-around hot mess most of the time, or all the time, this post is for you.

A few years ago I tried my first planner.  Now, I don’t mean a small one bought at the local Walmart.  I mean a full blown, has its own website type planner.  I liked it a lot and used it a good bit, but the next year, that is when I found the planner I currently use.  It’s the Simplified Planner by Emily Ley, and I absolutely love it.

But There’s More!

Emily Ley not only has planners, she has tons of accessories and other organizing tools.  She has grocery lists, meal planners, wedding planners, school planners, pens, clips, notebooks, and so much more.  She has also written books about simplifying your life and giving yourself some grace, but the planner is what really got this hot mess somewhat under control.  What?  A mess this size will never be perfectly contained.  I told y’all I am far from perfect.  Just keeping it 100.

You’re THE One for Me!

My favorite planner is the daily version.  You can also get a weekly planner or a special version called the Dapper Desk.  Dapper Desk is very minimal and clean looking.  It was originally designed for men.  The weekly versions are bound, as are the Dapper Desks, but the daily is a spiral.  So far, I haven’t had one break on me, and I haven’t had any pages or tabs wear out.  And according to my mama, I am rough on my things.  Some of us are just like that I guess.

I love the daily version of the planner, because it has a page for each weekday with a spot for appointments, a place for your “To Do” list, and a place for notes.  The weekend spots are smaller, all on one page, but still perfectly functional.  There are also other sections in the planner to help you get and stay organized, including a calendar view for each month, a notes section, yearly bucket list, and more.

You Inspire Me!

Emily is really good about going Live with her customers, especially during launches, and she also has lots reference materials with hints and tips on how to stay organized and simplify your life.  She is really one of the inspirations I had in my mind when I started my own blog.  She and Mrs. Dana K. White.  I’ll be telling you about her really soon.  These two ladies changed my life so much for the better.

If you have any questions about how I use my planner, I would be happy to answer them.  Just comment below.  I’m an open book… Well… Open planner in this case.  And if you have tips on how you use yours, please share those as well. And hopefully, if you are a hot mess now, you’ll at least be only lukewarm after you start using your planner like me.

The photographs on Emily’s site are kind-of pale, so the ones here are of my own planner, so you can see them better.

This is a link to Emily’s site. Most of the planners are sold out right now, but what remains is on sale. She will be launching next year’s planners soon. She has some Facebook pages you can Like and Follow to get the latest on that. There are lots of other wonderful items on her website to browse through and videos to watch to get you excited for when those new planners drop. Happy shopping!
