Menopause Mane

Menopause Mane

If you’ve already done some reading here at Joy with Jamie, you know that I had breast cancer. I was diagnosed back in 2015, just three days after I started dating my now boyfriend. I have always had fine, thin hair, but cancer really did a number on what was left. During chemo, my hair fell out. My hair grew back, but it was a finer and thinner when it returned. To add insult to injury, the medication I am now on to keep my cancer at bay suppresses estrogen. My hair has aged my hair 30 years. Those of you in menopause know exactly the hair I’m talking about. It is practically see through thin.

With hair like mine, I was mostly wearing it pulled up in a scrunchie. Couldn’t do much else with it. But then, I noticed it was getting so thin that the scrunchie wouldn’t even stay in place well without being twisted at least three times! It also pulled a lot of hair out when I removed it. Not good. I’ve got no hair to spare! I started searching for barrettes and clips that worked with fine, thin hair. None I tried stayed in place worth a flip and/or pulled out my hair when I removed them. I was about to give up and cut all my hair off. Seriously. I was. But then…

I was shopping in Walmart one day and decided I would look one more time for something to hold my hair up. I am ever the optimist. My eyes moved up and down the products, searching. I said to myself, as I looked, “More scrunchies. Nope. There are those barrettes you tried before that fall out before you even leave the mirror. Argg. Oh! Maybe those! Never mind. You tried those clips already. Your hair is too thin for them now.” As I was about to leave the section, I saw them. The holy grail of hair holders.

The color caught my eye first. It seemed like it would match my hair well enough. It was kind-of a bronzed gold. There were some gunmetal colors in the package of six as well. I thought to myself, “Those would work for Mom!” Then I saw how flat they were. My hair is flat. Mom’s hair is flat, when she doesn’t poof it up to high heaven. She believes in the old saying, “The bigger the hair the closer to God.” LOL. I looked closer at the packaging, and it said the clips have grippers. My heart skipped a beat. This could be just what I have been looking for all my life.

When I got home, I tried the clips immediately, after sanitizing them of course. We are in the middle of a pandemic after all. When I opened the package, I noticed each clip had four tiny little soft gripper dots on the underside of the top of the clip (a.k.a. barrette for old school folks like me). I opened the clip and slid the comb teeth side underneath my hair and flipped the top of the clip down over top. It snapped in place… And stayed! Then, the moment of truth. Would it stay. I shook my head from side to side. No clip movement at all! And it unsnapped super easy, and it didn’t take a single hair with it when I took it out. Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner!

Revlon’s Double Grip Clips stay put and do NOT pull out hair when removed carefully. This product is a life saver, or should I say, hair saver. If you have fine and/or thinning hair, you should definitely give these clips a try. Absolutely worth it. A lifelong search has come to and end, and given the number of packages I’ve stockpiled for me and Mama, I definitely put my money where my mouth is.
