What If?

What If?

My heart is beating so fast as I write.  I have images of people in my mind right now, people I love with all my heart.  You may be one of the people I am thinking about, even if I don’t know you personally. Maybe you can tell. You feel it. You have goosebumps at the thought. And my question to you is, “What if you’re wrong?”

Several years ago, I attended a huge event in DC and heard an artist that was new to me, Nichole Nordeman.  One of the songs she sang was written for a friend of hers.  Her heart was burdened for them, like mine is for some of you. She spoke to her friend through the lyrics. You can hear her sadness, but you can also hear hope.

This is amazing song is titled, “What If?” It was written out of love, and I am including the lyrics here for the same reason. I do this out of love. I’ll have a few final thoughts and joy finding helps for you immediately following the song, so please read on.

What if you’re right?
And He was just another nice guy.
What if you’re right?
What if it’s true?
They say the cross will only make a fool of you.
And what if it’s true?

What if He takes His place in history,
With all the prophets and the kings,
Who taught us love and came in peace,
But then the story ends.
What then?

But what if you’re wrong?
What if there’s more?
What if there’s hope you never dreamed of hoping for?

What if you jump?
And just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you catch you by surprise?
What if He’s more than enough?
What if it’s love?

What if you dig.
What if you dig.
Way down deeper than your simple-minded friends.

What if you dig?
What if you find a thousand more unanswered questions down inside.
That’s all you find.

What if you pick apart the logic, and begin to poke the holes.
What if the crown of thorns is no more than folklore that must be told and retold.

But what if you’re wrong?
What if there’s more?
What if there’s hope you never dreamed of hoping for?

What if you jump?
Just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you catch you by surprise?
What if He’s more than enough?
What if it’s love?

You’ve been runnin as fast as you can.
And you’ve been looking for a place you can land so long.
But what if you’re wrong?

What if you jump?
And just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you catch you by surprise?
What if He’s more than enough?
What if it’s love?

Finding Joy:  Have you seen someone experience some of the worst things life has to offer and still find a way to be thankful?  Do you know someone who still has joy even during the darkest of times, moments that would take most people down?  Have you met a person that can forgive even great wrongs, who has a light that you are inexplicably drawn to? Take a minute to think about that. I’ll wait.

I am willing to bet that person you have in your mind right now has found the true source of joy, hope, and peace and has learned to tap into it.  Their light, their source, is Jesus Christ.  If you think there is even a chance that you might be wrong about the path that leads to life, please read my post titled “My Greatest Joy” right now.  We are not promised tomorrow, and you are looking to find joy today. Remember. That’s why you’re here. Me too.
